Then, the boy's soul explained the truth, and Chad became protective of that boy. Shrieker was after that boy's soul, and Chad took it upon himself to keep that bird-boy safe, no matter what. Not even Ichigo makes friends with souls so easily. Near the end of Season 1, Rukia was dragged back to the Soul Society by her foster brother, Byakuya Kuchiki , and unfairly sentenced to execution. Ichigo was determined to rescue her, and Chad bravely volunteered to help. Rukia and Chad didn't have much of a connection, but Chad was fond of her, and he felt like he'd be disappointing his grandfather's memory if he didn't use his newfound strength to help an innocent person in need.

Chad didn't stand a chance against Captain Shunsui Kyoraku , but even that Captain's overwhelming spiritual pressure didn't scare Chad off.
