Why is comitatus important in beowulf

Not only did BeoWulf kill Grendal but his mother as well! His famous king bloody, gasping for breath , Beowulf continued his legacy by fighting the dragon. Fate is the development of events beyond a persons control, regarded as determined by a supernatural power. Fate has swept our race away, taken warriors in their strength and led them to the death that was waiting , Beowulf talks about fate as he dies and what it has done to his people. Now Grendal and I are called together, and Ive come , Herot talking about how fate brought him and Grendal together.

But fate, that night, intended Grendal to gnaw the broken bones of his last human supper , This quote talks about how it is Beowulfs fate to kill Grendal. Loyalty is the quality of being loyal to someone or something.

As Grendal and Beowulf battled across them. Hrothgars wise men had fashioned Herot to stand forever , The fire from the dragon 's mouth melts the contribution from the king made beowulf useless of his weapon. Now beowulf is defenceless but still he continues to fight; beowulf gets bit by the dragon leaving him on his deathbed from the poisonous dragon. Before dying Beowulf tells Wiglaf to go and get the treasure to bring it back to him.

So Wiglaf goes and gets the treasure and comes back; Beowulf then tells Wiglaf that he is to be the next king because he stood by him.

A man can only become a warrior if they acquire the title of bravery, a very highly valued trait, from the community.

Beowulf shows his bravery to the community in prior battles with his power and strength, which allows him to become a leader and pick the next men. Beowulf in a prior battle overcomes the dark depths of war with his bravery and can still defeat the enemy.

The previous battle illustrates that the symbol of bravery becomes more emphasized because of the dark depths of the war and that Beowulf did not get distracted with the struggles of the war.

Send to Hygelac, if battle takes me off, the best of battle garments that arms my breast… Fate ever goes as it must. But what of other…. Beowulf shows great amounts of bravery when it comes to his many fights. Without this bravery, his loyalty would not be noticed as much because he would just be another stereotyped king.

Beowulf and his warriors travel a long way to help the king fight Grendal. The phrase comitatus is extremely important in Anglo-Saxon culture and is demonstrated strongly in Anglo-Saxon texts. Comitatus means fellowship, particularly an allegiance between a lord and his men. This phrase refers to a very important tradition during the times of the Anglo-Saxons.

It was so important because these men were constantly protecting their people from outside attacks and invasions and the comitatus was the bond that held these men together and that is what they lived for. The comitatus ensured that neither left the field of battle before the other. If a warrior deserted his fellow warriors, he was essentially outcast by his clan. The wanderer in the story has lost his fellow warriors and lord in battle, and now walks alone in exile.

Throughout history rulers have always been protective of their kingdoms. In hopes of always being in control of their territory, rulers develop special relationships with the people to protect them. This relationship was usually achieved by of instilling fear into the minds of their warriors, or instilling respect between each other.

In the story Beowulf the relationship between the ruler and his thanes is that of honor, friendship, and respect. In Anglo Saxon stories, the relationship between the ruler and his thanes is known as comitatus.

The comitatus relationship requires that "the thane swear to defend a lord to their death, while he provides them with the protection and a share of his wealth and weapons.

Because Grendel is a descendent of Cain, and Cain being the most notorious brother slayer, shows that Anglo Saxon culture look very poorly upon a person going against his family.

In Beowulf, the comitatus relationship is seen between Hrothgar and his retainers and between Beowulf and his men. The comitatus also extended to a long-standing bond between the Geats Beowulf? Because of this bond, Beowulf and his men left their homes and traveled to the lands of the Danes to help them in time of need. This social tie within the society makes the comitatus relationship even stronger. Furthermore, the lord and Thane relationship is represented well in Beowulf.
