We have heard it so many times that we think it is a direct quote from scripture. We would however be wrong in that. While it is completely okay to arrive with all your sins and baggage when you first meet the Lord it is almost obligatory , it is only the first step in a lifelong journey.
Over-emphasising this first step justification at the expense of what ought to happen thereafter sanctification can lead not only to dangerous theology, but also a failure to bring many Christians into the fullness of their relationship with God. Some, like John McArthur, may even argue that many such people have unwittingly not attained true salvation at all. The Gospel message should never stop short.

The doctrine of sanctification helps us to realise that we have been saved for good works in this life and ultimately reconciliation with God which is glorification. Understanding these doctrines, our good works ought to flow naturally after justification before God as we travel on our journey of sanctification towards ultimate glorification.
Living and preaching only half of the doctrine of justification and sanctification often leads to cultural syncretism and an unhealthy culture of permissiveness. These issues currently plague our churches, seemingly in the name of inclusivity and moral liberality.
The Gospel is nothing if not radical. It calls us to leave behind our sinful past and idolatrous practices and work towards changing attitudes and behaviours — this is the process of sanctification.
